米国牛肉の輸入再開がニュースになっている。E29 和牛肉の輸出と全頭検査 (2004/01/21）からしばらくたっているので、日本の牛肉の米国への輸出はどうなったか調べてみた。
米国の輸入統計のサイトが変更になっていて目的の数字を探すのにちょっと手間取ったが見つけた。Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS)にFATUS importsという所があり、そこで国名をJapan、FATUS Commodity GroupingsをBeef and Vealにして年度を選択して、StatisticsをQuantityに、TypeをGeneralにしたら以前調べた数字と同じ単位のMTでの米国の日本からの牛肉輸入統計が出てきた。
今年になって日本から牛肉が米国に輸出されるようになっていることがわかった。やっぱりアメリカでもしゃぶしゃぶを食べたいのかな。

妻が先日電源コードやパソコンのケーブルを束ねるチューブを買って来た。半透明のチューブを螺旋に切ってあって沢山のコードにまきつけて束ねるもの。結構すっきりする。包装にスパイラルチューブとあるので英語でどういうのか調べてみた。スパイラルチューブで検索すると出てきた会社が外資系のようなので英語のサイトに行ってみたら、英語はspiral wrapだった。
チューブは螺旋に切ってしまったらチューブじゃないもんな。英語のままでスパイラル・ラップとしたら英語としては正しいんだけどラップは食べ物の包装に使うラップが定着していて、用途が誤解されそうなんでチューブとしたのかな。スパイラルチューブとあって英語でそのまま通じると思ったら違うことがあることがわかった。身の廻りにあるカタカナをそのまま受け入れてはいけないことがわかった。カタカナになったとたんに日本語だと思うようにしたらいいのかもしれない。
spiral tubeだと実験器具でありそうなので、glass spiral tubeで検索したらそれらしいものが出てきた。気圧計(barometer)で使うようだ。

さっき妻が新聞を持って来て、全米プロ選手権で初優勝したフィル・ミケルソンの写真を指差して、「ガッツポーズ」って英語で何て言うの、と聞いてきた。毎日新聞の夕刊の記事の写真の下に書いてあった文章は「１８番ホールでバーディーを決め、ガッツポーズをするミケルソン」。
Google NewsでUS版に行って、探したら同じ写真が出てきた。英語は、Phil Mickelson pumps his fist after sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the PGA Championship. (AP)
pumpはKODの説明でぴったりくるのはなかったが、「《握手で》（・・・の手を上下に勢いよく）振り動かす(up and down)とあった。まあ、この動きに合った英語だと思う。
「ガッツポーズ 英語で」で検索すると沢山ヒットするが、どれも今回の場合はしっくりいかない。
週間ST Onlineでは、punch the airだった。これは上に手を突き上げる格好だろう。
ウィキペディアでは、語源の説明はあったが、ガッツポーズは和製英語としか書いてない。
カタカナ英語バスターズでは、raise one's fist(s) in triumphだったが、これも手を上に上げる状態だな。
和製英語の間違いを取り上げるサイトは沢山あるが、間違い英語を覚えてしまうので、あまりそっちに関心が行かないようにしている。でも今回はおもしろかった。原文に直行したのですぐに回答が見つかった。（できない場合もあるが、原文にあたる）このやり方は、すぐに身につくのでいいと思う。

２００５年４月に再就職してからは、仕事が忙しく時間がとれず、これまで記事を書く時間も気力もなくなっていたが、やっと夏休みでちょっと時間ができたので、本当に久しぶりに書いてます。

お気に入りをネット上に登録するサイト。別のPCからお気に入りにアクセスできるので便利。リンクにキーワードをつけることができ、絞り込める。他の人達が登録したお気に入りを見ることができる。英語のサイトだが、日本語も登録できる。自由人の登録したお気に入りはここ。
del.icio.usのpopular siteのリストをfunというタグで絞り込むと、おもしろそうなリンクのリストが出てくるが、そこで見つけたものが多いが、たまに日本語サイトも登録している。のんびり自由人が見つけたおもしろサイトはここ。
これからは短い記事をちょこちょこ書こうと思っています。

のんびり自由人は、この度ひょんなことから再就職しました。二年間の「のんびり自由人」生活とお別れし、通勤電車にゆられています。年収は半分になりました。でも、ひさしぶりの仕事を楽しんでいます。就職が決まった日は夕方妻とお祝いの食事をしました。気長に待っててくれた家族に感謝しています。
おもしろい英語のトピックも時々頭に浮かぶんですが、調べまくる時間がとれません。でもこれからもおもしろい記事を掲載しようとおもっていますので、気長にお待ち下さい。これからも宜しくお願いします。
追記：「のんびり自由人-Freeman at Leisure」というタイトルをどう変えたらいいのか考え中です。英語Freeman at Workでいいかなとも思っていますが、日本語の方がうまい言い方が思い浮かびません。「のんびり不自由人」でもないし。「働くのんびり自由人」もなんか違和感があるし、「のんびり自由人の再就職」もぴんとこないし。。。今でも気分は「のんびり自由人」なんだからそのままにしようかとか。色々考え中。いいアイデアがあったら教えて下さい。

米国のバージニア州で腰パン禁止法案が提出され、2月8日下院を通過したが、2月10日上院で否決された。2004年4月にルイジアナ州でも同様の法案が否決されているが（E56 腰パンの英語）、しばらくこのような法案提出が続くのだろうか。。。
この法案はa bill Tuesday authorizing a $50 fine for anyone who displays his or her underpants in a "lewd or indecent manner." というものだった。否決されたとのニュースは以下。
Virginia lawmakers dropped their droopy-pants bill Thursday after the whole thing became just too embarrassing.
The bill, which would have slapped a $50 fine on people who wear their pants so low that their underwear is visible in "a lewd or indecent manner," passed the state House on Tuesday but was killed by a Senate committee two days later in a unanimous vote.
lewedは、みだらな、わいせつな。
indecentは、無作法な、見苦しい、卑猥な。
droopyは「たれた、しなだれた」。 でれっとした感じかな。
ニュースでこの腰パンをどのように言っているか調べてみた。
Low-Riding Pants (AP) - 車高を極端に低くした、から極端に下げたという意味だろう。

アメリカの友人が "Chicken Soup for the Beer Drinker" というビールにまつわる著名人のコメントを送ってきた。例えば以下。

ふむふむと読んでいって、にやりとしたりしていたが、一つだけ意味がわからないものがあった。それは以下。

この文を引用している所は沢山あったが、なぜ面白いのか説明している所がない。しばらく探し回って、やっと、mnemonics{記憶術）の一つに、スペリングの覚え方として、"I before E, except after C" というものがあるのがわかった。ようするに語呂合わせということか。

なるほど、Budweiserのスペリングでは、EがＩより前にある。でも、どこが面白いのかわからない。Budweiserのスペリングは覚えられたが。。。 コマーシャルにでもあったのかな。このサイトは他にも色んなことの覚え方が書いてあって面白かった。例えば円周率は、英文の各単語の文字数で覚える。皆苦労してるんだ。

英語を母国語としている人が間違いやすい単語が列記してある。その中のbelieveの説明中にThe "i-before-e" ruleというものは当てはまる場合よりも、例外の方が多いと書いてあった。やはり地道に覚えるしかないのだろう。

紙に書くとか、記憶しておくための色んなやり方を列記してある。いいことも書いてはあるが、私は無理に覚えることはしない。いろんなことを覚えようと努力するのもいいが、楽しくやっていて結果的に覚えてしまっていた方がもっといいと思う。
また、「覚えなければ忘れない」というのも真理だと思っている。そうすれば物忘れに愕然とすることもない、かもしれない。でも、忘れたくても忘れられないこともあるが。。。
脱線：mnemonicsとは記憶術のことだが、発音が難しい。なんたって最初の m は発音しない。発音は難しいがスペリングは覚えられる。のんびり自由人のmnemonicsの覚え方。「胸も肉っす」。 忘れられないでしょう。

E92「たばこの警告文」にコメントを貰った。DEATHという名前のたばこがあったそうだ。面白いので調べてみたら本当にあった！写真も見つけた。なるほど黒いパッケージに白いドクロマークがついている。販売していたのはDeath Tobacco Companyという会社。Charles Southwood (A Fistful of Westerns)という元映画俳優が、引退後、禁煙キャンペーンとしてDeath Tobacco Companyを設立したそうだ。

Charles Southwood, owner and founder of Death Tobacco Company, sold more than 75,000 cartons of Death Cigarettes in his first year of operation. He has 100 park benches in the Los Angeles area with his ads that say "Don't Smoke Death Cigarettes." The popular new brand is sold as a novelty item in Southern California for $3 a pack. They come in a black box with a large white skull and crossbones under the brand name DEATH. 調べている過程で他にも面白いたばこがあることがわかった。その名前は「Black Death Cigarettes」。
Black Death Cigarettes (The Smoker's Speakeasy) - 喫煙者に対する不寛容に怒って作った喫煙者のサイト。でもこのサイトは喫煙についての部分は今は無くなっている（現在のサイトGenkiGirl.orgはここ）。禁煙したのかな。
日本語の元気からサイト名を作ったそうだ。日本語がわかる人なんだ。なんか親しみを感じる（上のBlack Death CigarettesのリンクはInternet Archiveで探した。Internet ArchivesについてはE82 Internet Archiveを参照）。
説明を読んでみたら、このBlack Deathというたばこは喫煙者のためのたばこで。最初に取り上げたDeathというたばことは違うそうだ。Death Tobacco Companyという会社は９０年代に無くなったそうだ。
Death cigarettesの考えは「if you want to kill yourself - great! We'll help ya along AND make a profit from your habit!"というものだったが、Black Death cigarettesのphilosophyは「I LIKE 'EM AND I'M GONNA SMOKE 'EM"だそうだ。色々調べてみたらこのBlack Deathの方は現在でも販売されているようだ。
この販売元は、Black Death Philosophyというものも作っている。

私も肩身の狭い思いをしているので気持ちはわかる。
探し回っていたら、禁煙キャンペーンのために設立された面白い名前の会社も見つけた。それは、Licensed to Kill, Inc.という名前で、2003/04/01に米国バージニア州に設立された実在の会社。 この会社のスローガンは、"We're Rich. You're Dead!"だそうだ。この会社は禁煙キャンペーンをたばこ会社として行っていて、プレスリリースとしてPhilip Morrisをたたえたりしている。Articles of Incorporation(定款)には次のように明記されている。
The purpose of the corporation is to engage in any business permitted by the Commonwealth of Virginia and not required to be stated herein including, but not limited to, the manufacture and marketing of tobacco products in a way that each year kills over 40,000 Americans and 4.5 million other persons worldwide.
販売」しているたばこのブランドはすごい名前だ。
Global Massacre、L2K (License to Killのこと）、CHAIN,、SLAVE、 WEAK ORGAN、Genocide、Serial Killer、WOMD (Weapon of Mass Destructionのこと）。
近々発売予定は：Throat Hole、Chemo、Dead Poor、limp等としている。 Licensed to Killは、Marlboroのパッケージにそっくりだ。
ここでちょっと脱線
E92「たばこの警告文」でも書いたが、WHOの報告で、たばこの価格と喫煙者数は反比例するとあった。法規制もある程度の効果はあるだろうが、値上げが一番効果的だと思う。とぼしい小遣いからやりくりしている者としては、外国のように今の倍の値段になったら、禁煙しないと飲み会にも行けなくなる。その時は当然禁煙だな。。
外国のたばこの警告文の画像を探しまわったけど見つからなかった。英語圏に住んでおられる方で、お暇な方がおられましたら、現在どのような警告文になっているか画像を送ってもらえませんか。。。Marlboroがいいかも。

■注意文書の背景
調べてみたら、WHO（世界保健機構）の「たばこ規制枠組条約」というのを平成１６年の１５９回国会で承認した結果だとわかった。

条約の和文が読める。
WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
条約の英文。WHOでは公用語はアラビア語、中国語、英語、フランス語、ロシア語、スペイン語のようだ。
たばこ事業法施行規則関係条文
財務省令で文言を定めることになっていて、文言は、容器包装の使用な面の１０文の３以上に大きく、明瞭に、読みやすく表示しなければならない、となっている。
たばこの規制に関する世界保健機関枠組条約（条約第１７号）に関する資料
この条約により包装がどのように変るかのイメージがある。また、注意文言が８つあげられている。
注意文書は別表第一と第二があり、各々四種類ある。別表一と別表二を組み合わせて一つの包装の表と裏に表示する形のようだ。注意文書の内容は、第一が、肺がん、心筋梗塞、脳卒中、肺気腫、第二が、胎児の発育障害や早産、周りの人の健康への悪影響、ニコチンによる喫煙への依存、未成年者の喫煙。
これから、この第一と第二を組み合わせた四セットを見ることになるのだろう。。。でもこの訳文くささは何とかならないものか。
■新旧パッケージの比較
条約による変更の概略がわかったので、新旧のパッケージを開いて比較してみた（展開した状態）。
正面：旧にはあった宣伝文「LOW TAR, DISTINCTIVELY SMOOTH The quality and character of MILD SEVEN lights in a sophisticated new blend. REFINED TASTE」が無くなり、MILD SEVEN 20 CHARCOAL FILTERSだけになり、注意文書が下の３分の１に表示。
背面：正面と同じ変更。
側面：旧は「あなたの健康を損なうおそれがありますので吸いすぎに注意しましょう 禁煙マナーをまもりましょう」と金色の文字。新は「本パッケージに記載されている製品名の「mild、special lights」の表現は、本製品の健康に及ぼす悪影響が他製品と比べて小さいことを意味するものではありません。」と青文字。タール、ニコチンの量の表示色が、金色から青色に変更。
上面：20 CHARCOAL FILTERSが、金色から青色に変更。
■条約
条約のラベルに関する部分は以下。（対比するためにWHOのサイトの英文と、日本の外務省の作成した訳文を一緒にした。WHOの文章はコピー可能だが、外務省の訳文はコピーができないＰＤＦの設定になっていた。なぜなんだろう。。。。）
Article 11
Packaging and labelling of tobacco products
第十一条 たばこ製品の包装及びラベル
1. Each Party shall, within a period of three years after entry into force of this Convention for that Party, adopt and implement, in accordance with its national law, effective measures to ensure that: 締約国は、この条約が自国について効力を生じた後三年以内に、その国内法に従い、次のことを確保するため、効果的な措置を採択し及び実施する。
(a) tobacco product packaging and labelling do not promote a tobacco product by any means that are false, misleading, deceptive or likely to create an erroneous impression about its characteristics, health effects, hazards or emissions, including any term, descriptor, trademark, figurative or any other sign that directly or indirectly creates the false impression that a particular tobacco product is less harmful than other tobacco products. These may include terms such as "low tar", "light", "ultra-light", or "mild"; and たばこ製品の包装及びラベルについて、虚偽の、誤認させる若しくは詐欺的な手段又はたばこ製品の特性、健康への影響、危険若しくは排出物について誤った印象を生ずるおそれのある手段（特定のたばこ製品が他のたばこ製品より有害性が低いとの誤った印象を直接的又は間接的に生ずる用語、形容的表示、商標、表象による表示その他の表示を含む。）を用いることによってたばこ製品の販売を促進しないこと。これらの手段には例えば「ロー・タール」、「ライト」、「ウルトラ・ライト」又は「マイルド」の用語を含めることができる。
(b) each unit packet and package of tobacco products and any outside packaging and labelling of such products also carry health warnings describing the harmful effects of tobacco use, and may include other appropriate messages. These warnings and messages: たばこ製品の個装その他の包装並びにあらゆる外側の包装及びラベルには、たばこの使用による有害な影響を記述する健康に関する警告を付するものとし、また、他の適当な情報を含めることができること。これらの警告及び情報は、
(i) shall be approved by the competent national authority, 権限のある国内当局が承認する。
(ii) shall be rotating, 複数のものを組合せを替えて表示する。
(iii) shall be large, clear, visible and legible, 大きなもの、明瞭なもの並びに視認及び判読の可能なものとする。
(iv) should be 50% or more of the principal display areas but shall be no less than 30% of the principal display areas, 主たる表示面の五十パーセント以上を占めるべきであり、主たる表示面の三十パーセントを下回るものであってはならない。
(v) may be in the form of or include pictures or pictograms. 写真若しくは絵によることができ、又は写真若しくは絵を含めることができる。
2. Each unit packet and package of tobacco products and any outside packaging and labelling of such products shall, in addition to the warnings specified in paragraph 1(b) of this Article, contain information on relevant constituents and emissions of tobacco products as defined by national authorities. たばこ製品の個装その他の包装並びにあらゆる外側の包装及びラベルには１(b)に規定する警告に加え、たばこ製品の関連のある含有物及び排出物であって国内当局が定めるものについての情報を含める。
3. Each Party shall require that the warnings and other textual information specified in paragraphs 1(b) and paragraph 2 of this Article will appear on each unit packet and package of tobacco products and any outside packaging and labelling of such products in its principal language or languages. 締約国は１(b)及び２に規定する警告その他文字による情報をたばこ製品の個装その他の包装並びにあらゆる外側の包装及びラベルに自国の主要な一又は複数の言語で記載することを要求する。
4. For the purposes of this Article, the term "outside packaging and labelling" in relation to tobacco products applies to any packaging and labelling used in the retail sale of the product. この条の規定の適用上、たばこ製品に関する「外側の包装及びラベル」とは当該たばこ製品の小売販売に使用されるあらゆる包装及びラベルをいう。
■日本の包装の対応
条約を読んでみて、やっとたばこの包装が、それを最低限満たす形で変更されたことがわかった。なるほど文言は一番広い面の３割位の広さだ。マイルドは、その用語で誤った印象を与えないために、そういう意味ではないとの説明がパッケージの横に書いてある。
「本パッケージに記載されている製品名の「mild, special lights」の表現は、本製品の健康に及ぼす悪影響が他製品と比べて小さいことを意味するものではありません。」
■外国の状況
他の国の場合は、どうなっているのか調べてみた。基本的な情報はWHOに沢山あった。
Tobacco Free Initiative：ここのRelated publicatonsにTobacco country profilesとThe tobacco atlasがあり、各国の状況がわかる。 Tobacco atlasの中のPrice Policyでは見やすい見開きの説明があり、価格と喫煙者数は反比例することがグラフで示されている。
国民一人当りの年間喫煙本数と国産タバコ２０本の価格
日本：3023で増加中 (1970=100、2000=104)。$2.16
米国：2082で減少中 (1970=100、2000=58)。$4.08
カナダ：1771で激減中(1970=100、2000=55)。$4.34
スウェーデン：1107で激減中(1970=100、2000=66)。$4.02
日本の場合は、先進国の国民一人当りの年間喫煙本数が低下する中、逆に微増。たばこの価格も他国の半分。

これに似た感じで日本のたばこの画像を探したら、ＪＴのサイトのＱ＆Ａでは「未成年者の喫煙防止の観点から、銘柄ごとのパッケージ画像は掲載しておりません。」とのこと。

QUITNET 英語のサイト。登録すると色んな支援が受けられる。同じ禁煙するという目標を持つ人達とチャットしたり、組になることができる。登録時に喫煙について簡単な質問に答えると以下が表示された。

■脱線
たばこ規制枠組条約を読んでみて、それまでは、条約なんてまじまじと見たことはなかったが、構成で面白いとおもったのは前文(Preamble)。
「この条約の締結国は The Parties to this Convention」と言う言葉にはじまって、色んな背景を列記してある。最初は「公衆の健康を保護する自国の権利を優先させることを決意しDetermined to give priority to their right to protect public health」となっている。
列記されている各文章の最後の言葉は以下。異なる英単語は異なる日本語に訳したらいいと思うが、そうなっていないものもある。deeplyとseriouslyがどう違うのだろう。また、Alarmedが留意し、というのはちょっと疑問。

2004/12/29夜NHKの「緊急報告・スマトラ沖地震 巨大津波はなぜ起きたのか」を見た。そこで、押し波（上げ潮）、引き波（引き潮）という言葉を聞いた。また、今回の津波の伝わり方を示したアニメーションも放映された。それによれば、震源に近い所では汐が引き、遠いスリランカでは大きな津波が一気に襲ったことがわかる。これまで、津波の前には汐が引くと思っていたが、考えを改めなくては。。。
この押し波という言葉を英語で何と言うのか知りたくなった。また、アニメーションも見たいので調べてみた。 押し波は「遡上」runup、引き波は、正式にはどういうのかわからないが、英語ではbackwashということがわかった。また、アニメーションはここ（佐竹 健治（独立行政法人 産業技術総合研究所 活断層研究センター）。
調べている過程で、tsunamiという言葉は、1968年に米国の海洋学者Van Dornがtsunamiを正式な学術英語とすることを提案したこともわかった（国立歴史民俗博物館

例えばrun-upは次のように説明されている。

インド洋大津波のニュースが連日トップニュースになっている。 Google Newsで検索してみたら津波のニュースで一杯だ。（左の図は津波の震源図 NOAA)
英語で津波のことを、そのままtsunamiと言っている。私が覚えている英語はtidal waveだが、気になったので調べてみた。

色々探し回ってわかりやすいサイトをみつけた。時々お世話になっているNOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)のサイトのTop Storyで扱っている。いずれはなくなると思うが。。。1963年から世界的に使われるようになったことを初めて知った。

このサイトには、津波のアニメーション (Quick Time movie)があった。ニュースでも放映していたものだ。他に、津波の説明や津波のものすごく詳細な説明、それからTsunamiReadyというつなみについての啓蒙サイトもあった。対策の説明が多く、定義の説明がさほど細かくないので、さらに定義を探しまわって、津波だけを扱っているサイトを見つけた。

■津波の前に汐が引くのは俗説
さらに探してみたら、津波が来る前に水が引くのは俗説という説明を見つけた。 今回の大津波で汐が引いている映像を見て当然だと思っていたが、そうではない場合もあることを初めて知った。

伝承
過去の津波による証言や昔話等の伝承に「水平線の彼方まで水が引き、その後に巨大な津波が襲来した」といった事実があるが、これは諸条件が合致して起きる例であり「津波の起こる前に海面が引く」とするのは俗説である。海岸に押し波が先に来るか、引き波が先に来るかは、震源直上の海底がどちらに動いたかによって決まり、どちらの波になるかの予測は難しい。津波は震源直上の海底地形が隆起した直上で発生することから、隆起と沈降のうち海上の震源地に対して陸地寄りの位置で隆起が起きるといわゆる高波としての押し波（上げ潮）が先に襲来し、震源地を境に陸地寄りで沈降が起きて沖合い側で隆起があった場合は引き波（引き潮）が先に起きる。
■ここで脱線 - megatsunamiの場合はどうしようもないかも
別のニュースで、隕石が2029年4月13日（の金曜日）に地球に衝突するかもしれないというのがあった。もし海に落ちたらものすごい津波が起こるそうだ。

Reports that the asteroid known as 2004MN4 has a one in three hundred chance of hitting Earth in 25 years may be reasonably accurate. The asteroid was discovered in June and is estimated to be 1,300 feet long. NASA scientist Donald Yeomans in Pasadena, California says he cannot rule out the possibility the asteroid may hit Earth on Friday April 13, 2029. He says it would be likely to create a quite serious tsunami if it came down in the ocean, or significant damage if it impacted on land.
その場合はDeep Impactのような高さが100メートル以上のMegatsunamiがおこるんだろうな。。。
1964年の新潟地震(M7.5)の時は、中学生で新潟市内の海岸の近くに住んでいた。地震の後で津波がくるとの話が伝わってきて、面白そうなので見に行こうとしたら、母親に強く止められたので行かなかった。後で聞いた所によると５０ｃｍ程度の津波が来たそうだ。
今回の津波でも、波が押し寄せてきたとき、初めは比較的ゆっくり歩いている人を見たが、津波と避難についての啓蒙が世界的に必要だと思った。でも、隕石落下の場合はどうしようもないかもしれない。。。それまで生きていたらよぼよぼで逃げられない。

おもしろいサイトを見つけた。類語を視覚的に表示してくれるVisual Thesaurus。結構有名らしいが知らなかったので使ってみた。
■きっかけ
知るきっかけは、調べ物があるときによく使うOneLook。単語を入れると沢山の辞書で意味が調べられる。一般辞書で最初にリストされているのがMerrian-Webster's Online Dictionaryだが、その辞書で単語を調べたときにたまたま上部に表示されていた広告が目に止まった。それがVIsual Thesaurus。
■概要
この類語辞典は、単語を入れると、その単語を中心にして、関連した単語が枝のようにまわりに表示される。その単語の持つ（複数の）意味が丸で表され、その廻りに単語が生えている感じ。丸は名詞、形容詞、動詞、副詞で色分けされている。丸の上にカーソルを置くと意味と例文が表示される。
単語と（丸の）意味は同意語の場合は実線でつながっている。通常は複数の同意語が一つの意味をあらわしているので同意語群(synset=a set of one or more synonyms)と言う。
■関連付け
リンクには点線もあり、色々な意味で関連付けされている。関連付けの種類は次の１３種類。

表示される単語群の中で意味を見ながら、表示された単語の中からさらに調べたい単語をクリックすると、その単語が中心に移動して関連語が表示される。反対語はあまり表示されない。
■試用した感想
説明を読んでもすぐにはわからないのでしばらく使ってみた。これはいい。こんなものが欲しかった。
以前は無料だったらしいが、今は有料。でも、５検索１０クリックまでは試用できる。その制限値までいったら、一旦終了して、再度アクセスしたらまた使えるので、たまに使う分には無料で使えることになる。再アクセス前の中心の単語を覚えていないと、そこから始められないのでメモっておくといい。
このサイトの名前Freeman at Leisureで、at leisureの意味に無職という意味があることは以前書いた(E15 At Leisureの意味）が、その場合はたまたま見つけた。それをこのVisual Thesaurusを使ったらどのようになるかやってみた。
leisure>leisured>idle>unemployedとたどっていってすぐ類語を見つけられた。沢山の意味があってもグループになって表示されているので、意味を絞り込みやすい。普通の辞書だったら見落としそうな単語も目に入ってくる。
at leisureを入れたら一発でunemployedとつながって表示された。これには驚くとともに、ちょっとげっそりした。
ついでに、freeを入れてみたら、山ほど関連語が出てきた。後でゆっくり見てみよう。
紙ベースの辞書類ではMerriam Webster's Dictionary of Synonymsを愛用していた。例文が必ず載っているので。日本語の類語辞典も時々使った。ある意味を表現したいときに、頭に浮かぶ単語がどうもしっくりしないときにぴったりした単語を見つけることが（時々）できる。
また、単語を覚える時に関連付けして覚えるようにしている（E0A 私の英語学習方法、E0C私の英語学習法２（くもの巣理論）ので、同意語、反意語を調べるのにも使った。いい時代になったものだ。

毎日新聞で新潟中越地震で、避難住民に廃用性症候群に似た症状が被災者に出始めているというニュースがあった。
新潟中越地震：避難住民に廃用性症候群の疑い

避難所生活の長期化により運動量が減少することで、全身の機能が低下する「廃用性症候群」に似た症状が、新潟県中越地震の被災者に出始めている。全村避難が続く山古志村の避難所（長岡市）で健康相談をしている新潟県理学療法士会（深川新市会長）は「震災後心配されたエコノミークラス症候群よりも問題になる可能性がある」として警戒を呼び掛けている。
■ことば＝廃用性症候群
「生活不活発病」とも呼ばれ、体を動かさないため筋肉の衰えだけでなく内臓など全身の機能が低下する病気。高齢者に発症することが多く、症状が進むとさらに運動量の減少を招いて症状が進む。歩行不能や寝たきり状態になることもある。予防には、歩くなど体を動かすことが必要。厚労相の諮問機関・高齢者リハビリテーション研究会で今年１月に取り上げられ、一般にも知られるようになった。
この「廃用性症候群」という言葉は初めて聞いたので、少し調べてみた。健康な人でも安静にしていると筋力が驚くほど急速に衰えるのがわかった。私も運動しなくては。。。
リハビリテーションの知識 廃用症候群
人間の身体的・精神的機能は使わないと衰えて行きます。 例えば健康な人であっても、ベッド上で安静臥床を続けていると、下肢の筋力は1週目で20%、2週目で40%、3週目で60%も低下すると言われています。（略）
使わないこと（廃用）によって様々な身体的・精神的機能低下が生じますが、それら一連の症状を廃用症候群と言います。
廃用症候群について
健康人であっても、使わないと筋肉の萎縮、関節の拘縮は意外と速く進行します。安静による筋力低下は、1週目で20%、2週目で40%、3週目で60%にも及びます。
この筋力低下を回復させるためには意外に長くかかり、1日間の安静によって生じた体力低下を回復させるためには1週間かかり、1週間の安静により生じた体力低下を回復するには1か月かかるといわれます。
園田のリハビリテーションの広場の「リハビリテーションの知識」に廃用症候群のわかりやすい説明があった。「だから、起きていないといけないんです」という最後の言葉が心に残った。
廃用症候群(disuse syndrome)
安静、臥床は疾病治療において重要であることは一般にもひろく知られている。しかしながら安静・臥床には同時にマイナス面がある。この「安静（活動性低下）の弊害」を強調した概念が廃用症候群で、身体の全部あるいは一部を使用せずにいること（活動性低下）によって、全身あるいは局所の機能的・形態的障害を生じることをいい、米国の早期離床・早期歩行およびリハ医学の経験や研究で確立された。（略）
廃用症候群は、ごく軽微な疾患や外傷を契機としてその治療に伴う安静、活動性低下、また疾患でなくても単なる運動不足が身体機能を低下させそれ自体が身体運動を困難にし、生活の不活発化をまねくという形で悪循環を形成して進行していく。特に高齢者ではおこり易く、一旦おこると若年層に比べて治療（回復）は困難であり、「ねたきり老人」を作る大きな原因である。予防・治療のためには、必要以上の安静をとることを避け、その状態にあわせて安全な局所および全身の活動性維持、向上をはかることが重要である。
「廃用」という気になった言葉の英語はdisuseということがわかったので英語でも調べてみた。disuseという英語は初めてお目にかかった。disが廃でuseが用なんであっているが、妙な感じがする言葉だ。廃人という言葉を連想するのでいい感じはしない。
５０歳からは１０年で筋力は12%、筋量は6%低下するそうだ。週３回のウェイトトレーニングを２－３ヶ月やれば筋力、筋量を1/3増加できるそうだ。３０年分を取り戻せるそうだ。

ここでちょっと脱線
運動不足でこの「廃用性症候群」なってしまうというこの記事はひとごとではなかった。
実は、私は数年前に坐骨神経痛になって大変だった。ある日、特に運動したわけでもないのに右足が痛く、歩く時に足をひきずるようになった。立ったり、座ったりするときも、どこかに手をついて支えないとできなくなった。歩くのもすり足でゆっくりしか歩けない。横断歩道も信号が変りそうでも走れない。
整形外科に行ったら、レントゲンを撮られ、それを見て医者は、「坐骨神経痛です。このような状態になるのは普通はもう１０年後以上後です。このままになりたくないなら運動をしなさい、と真剣な目でにらまれた。
それから毎週通院し、牽引といって寝て足をひっぱる治療を受けた。まわりは老人ばかり。自分の体は老人なんだと実感して愕然とした。
鎮痛剤を処方され、数ヶ月。薬で痛みが無い時には、極力体を動かすようにした。エスカレーターは使わず階段を使った。電車もつり革を力を入れて引っ張るようにした。座っても座席に背中をつけることはぜず、背を伸ばして座った。週末は二時間程散歩をした。
数ヵ月後、恐る恐る鎮痛剤を止めた。痛くなかった。ほっとした。それからは、天気がいい時は散歩をするようになった。またあの時の状態にはなりたくないので。。。
と、いいながら最近はあまり体を動かしていないのに気がついた。電車で３０分つり革につかまっていただけで筋肉痛になったり、スーパーで数キロの買い物をバックに入れてしょったら、肩が痛くなったり。。。。
「廃用性症候群」を調べて、対応する英語がわかったことより、適度の運動をしなくてはという気になったのは収穫だった。
歩くのは季節を感じて好きなのでまず散歩からにしよう。。。

友人から、今の私そのままの感じがする「明日は明日の風が吹く」って英語でどう言うのか聞かれた。知らなかったので調べてみた。とりあえず「英語 "明日は明日の風が吹く"」で検索する。

Paul's Easy English Learning Room： 英語ことわざインデックスという所に「明日は明日の風が吹く」ということわざの説明で、モンキーズのＴＶシリーズ日本放映第一話で流れた曲に"Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day"というのがあると書いてあった。正式にはTomorrow is another day.というようだ。モンキーズなんて今の若者は知らないだろうな。私が小さいとき良く見たテレビ番組だ。懐かしい。
Screenplay: 出版物の中に、英語でひもとく「風と共にさりぬ」というのがあり、その映画の名セリフの説明があった。この映画は1939年に完成したそうだが、それから流行った言葉なんだろう。
こんなにたくさんの人々に愛されてきたわけ、そのひとつはこの作品が生み出した名セリフにあります。"Tomorrow is another day."（明日は明日の風が吹くわ）、"I'll never be hungry again!"（私は二度と飢えない！）というスカーレットの言葉にあるのは、常に前向きな力強さ。これらは現代でも色あせることがない、生きるための言葉なのです。
英語で何ていうのかがわかったので、「"tomorrow is another day" proverb」で検索したら面白いサイトを見つけた。
WorldofQuotes.com: 17000を超えることわざが掲載されている。国別にもなっており、日本のことわざが107載っていた。でもその一つは A good husband is healthy and absent. 夫元気で留守がいい、だった。英語から日本語を思い出せるものもあるが、わからないものもある。結構面白い。
単語で検索できるようにもなっている。tomorrowを入れると沢山出てくる。Tomorrow is another dayはトルコのことわざだそうだ。ことわざというのは、大抵、反対のことわざがあり、その時の気分でぴったりのものが見つけられることがよくある。今の気分で選んでみると。。。

もっと軽い感じはないのか。。。
一応、明日は明日の風が吹くは、tomorrow is another dayということになるが、どうも日本語の気楽、きままな感じが英語にはない感じがする。日本語の明日は明日の風が吹くというのは、もっと軽い感じがする。 別の言い方は無いかなと考えていたら、「ケセラセラ」という言葉を思い出した。そっちの方がぴったりするなと思った。
Que Sera Seraケセラセラと入れて検索するとで、Doris Dayの1956年の歌だった。歌詞を読むとこっちの方が合っている感じがする。じゃあ、それを英語でどう言うんだ。。。
"QUE SERA SERA means"で検索したら説明が出てきた。"C'est la vie." Is French for "That is life.""Que sera, sera." Means "Whatever will be, will be."
なんだ、さっき見つけたDoris Dayの歌詞の中でちゃんと英語で言ってたんだ。。。知らなかった。これが「明日は明日の風が吹く」の英語にぴったりの感じがした。でも英語の試験の回答だったら誤りにされるかも。。。
ここで、ちょっと脱線。2004/12/02の夜NHKで、この前のオリンピックのアーチェリーで銅メタルをとった学校の先生が出てきた。あのニコニコした顔で、朝起きる時に、「やるぞー」って感じで起きないといけない。また朝になったかという感じではいけないと言っていた。目的を持たないといけないと思った。目的がなければ、寝て起きて、食べて寝る。の連続、だから。。
そこで、勝手に作ったことわざ？
Spare nothing, enjoy NOW, as tomorrow may never come.
ちょっとネガティブだね。
Don't make tomorrow just another day.
Make it an exciting day - by actions today.
少しはポジティブになったかな。
二つを合体させてみた。

今日をとことん楽しみ、明日も張り切っていこう！

女性用のＤＭが来て妻と娘が見ていた。そしたらその中に色っぽい下着があり、そこにG-stringがあった。知ってるよと言ったら、娘は「何でお父さんそんなこと知ってるの」といやーな感じと冷たい目。妻はそれを聞いて「男だからね。」だって。
どんなものかは知っていたが、何でそういうのかは知らなかったので調べてみた。
Ask Yahoo! - はっきりしたことはわからないが、色んな説がある。
説１：girdle string
説２：バイオリンの一番低い音を出す弦のこと。低いというのがlow-cutに通じている。
説３：アメリカ先住民の言葉で、geestringiが語源。編んだ着物のこと。（リンクも付いていた。）
他にも色んな説があるようだが、決定的なものはないようだ。。。

Googlismで出てくる用例も面白い(Googlism) 。例えば、g-string is just a tight string that goes from front to back exposing the most flesh as possible
ここで脱線：たまたま見つけた面白いけど真面目なサイト
Boobie-Thon: 友達の所に行きたいけど飛行機代が無かった女性が、胸の写真をお礼に募金を友達に募ったらすぐに集まり、同じように写真をアップする人が出てきて、お金も飛行機代を突破したので、乳がんのための基金に寄付した。それを毎年イベントとしてやっている。 今年はNew York Timesの記事にもなった。写真はphotos submittedの所にある。
Sorry Everybody: Bushが勝って残念なアメリカ人が世界に対してごめんなさい、という写真を掲載するサイト。何でこんなことやってるのか、と批判も来るが、次はやるぞーという決意が見てとれる写真が多い。顔写真も出している人が大多数。１頁１０枚で、今日は６２５頁。６０００人が写真をアップしている。書いてある文章を読むと面白い。写真はgalleryの所にある。
どちらもちょっとしたアイデアが大きく広がっている。

たまたま見つけた面白いサイト：
Googlism - Googleの検索結果を面白く表示してくれる。例えば名前を入れるとその名前が使われている文章をリスト表示する。自分の名前を入れてみた。そしたら、ずらずらとでてきて、中には面白いものもあった。

Googleの検索でひっかかるということなので、"(My name) is a ninja"で検索してみたら、イギリスのゲームの背景説明で記述されていた。美しい秘書で実は忍者、父も忍者でやくざに仕えているとのこと。ゲームだからいいけど、日本の男性の名前を女性に使っている。
"(My name) is smart"を検索したら、今度は漫画の主人公で女の子をデートに誘うのが好きだとのこと。
Kabalarian Philosophy - ここは名前を入れると性格等の説明が出てくる。英語の姓名判断。日本の名前はあるかなと思って入れてみたらちゃんと出てくる。説明もそこそこ納得。もっと詳細な説明となると有料なので注意。

E83の場合と同様にflying by the seat of your pantsの意味を探していて、このサイトにflyingがひっかかって来た人がいた。ひっかかった部分はflying reindeerのflying。意味がわからないので調べてみた。

辞書を検索したが、すぐには出てこなかった。ようやくpantsを使った用例の中に見つけた。

What I heard was that it referred to doing something risky on instinct alone. It was commonly used in the World Wars (especially the First, where instruments were rudimentary at best), as noted above, when a person's visibility was affected by fog, clouds, darkness, and so on. 調べて見たら面白かった。元の意味から段々変化して、現在は一般的には否定的な意味に取られてしまっているのは仕方がない。ちょっと意味合いが違うかもしれないが、私は結構ボリュームのある翻訳をやる時は、最初に関連資料を読みあさり用語用例を頭に入れ、それからパソコンに向かって一気に訳すことが多い。その後、見直しはするが。その一気に翻訳するぞとパソコンに向かう時、飛行機のコックピットに乗り込む感じがしてた。今回のfly by the seat of your pantsというのも、何となくその時の感覚に似ている感じがしている。
検索でググッてみてダメなら、くくってみるといい。そこできっかけを見つけてさらに絞り込むと探しているものが見付かる場合が多い。

先日アクセス解析を眺めていたらTea Bag Philosophyというキーワードで来た人がいた。私のサイトではE22 Beer Philosophyという話を掲載したので、その文中のphilosphyがひっかかったんだろう。
検索で引用符でくくらないと、検索語のどれかがあれば、検索結果に出てくる。厳密に調べるなら引用符でくくるといい。簡単なことだが、以外と使われていないようだ。
